New Me

Yeah, what happened to this post?  Well, there's still pretty much the old me. I've lost a total of 9 pounds since May, which I really think sucks.  But I do have to admit, I've not been dieting per se.  I been doing Zumba twice a week, though. I love it.

Now, why have I decided to post?  Well, I had blood work done a couple of weeks ago and got the results this week.  My triglycerides are through the roof and as I'm already on a cholesterol lowering med, my doctor suggested a supplement instead.  I am not advocating anything here, so I won't give the name of it yet.  I got the stuff in the mail today, a high fiber mix I can put in water, juice, milk or cola (not sure I want to drink orange flavored milk). I drink it 10-15 mins before I eat.  In addition to lowering the triglycerides, it's also supposed to help me lose weight.  Oh, yea!!!  So, I'm going to keep you updated on that "side-effect."

I'm also going to have to cut back on white bread, white rice, pasta, potatoes...you know everything I like!
Here's as website to check .... guess I need to look it over again, too.  11 Power Foods to Lower Cholesterol.

New Me - Update

Well, not much of an update to give. I haven't lost any additional weight, boo hoo. Zumba was off for a week between sessions, so didn't do any exercising last week. Yes, I know, there's other ways to exercise, but I didn't do them.  We're back on tract this week.

Today, I bought a heart monitor. It's a step monitor as well, but I really got it to monitor my heart when I'm doing Zumba.  I have a fast heart beat as it is, and do take meds to slow it down, so I was curious to know what it did when I was jumping around in class....not too bad, actually.  But I did want to pass on some stuff that is in the little booklet that came with the monitor.  They are little gems of wisdom.

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams." ~ Henry David Thoreau

"According to the National Institute of Health, the normal adult resting heart rate falls between 60 to 100 beats per minute, but well-trained athletes fall at the low end of that range and sometimes 10-20 beats lower." [the older you are, the slower your heart rate should be).

"There are 1,440 minutes in every day -- schedule 30 of them for physical activity." ~ Center for Disease Control and Prevention

The benefits of physical activity:
  • Improves your over all health
  • Reduces stress, anxiety and depression
  • Increases your energy
  • Helps you sleep better
  • Tones muscles
  • Improves flexibility
  • Improves cholesterol levels
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Reduces pain of arthritis
  • Contributes to healthy bones, muscles and joints
  • Helps with weight loss, controlling your appetite and controlling your weight.
Physical activity reduces the risk of:
  • Osteoporosis
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Falls by older adults
  • Premature death
"It is impossible to walk rapidly and be unhappy." ~ Dr. Howard Murphy

"Ability is what you're capable of doing.  Motivation determines what you do.  Attitude determines how well you do it." ~ Lou Holtz

My goal for this week is to get back to the healthy eating, after Friday's Fish Fry...lol.  But I do need to get back to the 1,200 calorie diet (more calories per day if I exercise daily...another reason to exercise, more food!  LOL.  Yes, yes, healthy food.).

Do you have a healthy goal for the week?

New Me - Websites

I thought I'd share some of the websites with dieting, exercise and heathly eating tips that I've been looking at recently.

Top 5 Mistakes Dieters Make by Dr. Oz

The Science of Snack Factor Diet

Easy Ways to Stick to Your Diet

Blast off fat (way) faster

Calories Burned - learn how many calories you burn with certain activities

I really like Everyday Health's site.  If you scroll down the first page, you'll find some iphone and ipad apps, like a calorie counter and snack app.....it'll tell you how many calories certain snacks have, great way to keep the calories down.

Do you have a favorite dieting/exercise website?

New Me - Again

So, in January 2010, I started a “new me” blog posts. I think it lasted a few weeks! I was actually surprised when I went looking for the posts and saw that it was LAST year I started them, and not this year! It didn’t seem like it had been that long ago.

Anyway, I’m going to try to start it up again. My life is so busy, I’m not sure I can post each week, but I think I’ll try to post every other week. So what are the “new me” posts all about? Well, like a lot of people, I need to not only lose weight, but to get into shape. Honestly, I haven’t exercised much since high school, 30 years ago. A few weeks ago, I joined a zumba class and started watching my calorie intake. I’ve also been looking into various websites on nutrition and I thought I’d pass some of those along. I’m not making any claims or supporting any of them, just will pass them along for each of you to make choices on your own.

That being said, one site I found that helps me keep track of my calorie intake is http://www.myfitnesspal.com/. The website also has an iphone app, which is actually how I found it. I looked at the apps for a calorie counter. My Fitness Pal asks you questions and then tells you how many calories you should eat to meet your weight goal. Mine is 1200 calories a day….not much, let me tell you and I know I’ve blown it several days. But overall, I’m eating better and paying attention to what I am eating.

The website sets you up your own page where you plug in your foods each day, as well as any exercising you do (the good news….if you exercise you get extra calories for the day!). It keeps track for you and, as said, you can access it from your iphone (and probably other fancy phones).

My goals are to lose 35 pounds, however long it takes; get more physically fit, and to eat healthier. I don’t plan to give up my meat, bread, rice or potatoes, but I will attempt to cut back on them! Oh, a fried seafood…not giving that up either! However, I won’t eat it all the time either!

Here’s another site to help with the healthy eating, Easy Ways to Stick to Your Diet.

Oh, My Fitness Pal also has a Weight Loss Tickers. I have one posted on the right side there.  But I'll post it here, too.

A New Me - Part 2

Yes, I know....I've skipped a few weeks in this 'new me' discussion.  Basically because there wasn't much to tell.  Although I could have blogged about the broken machine.  I'll give you a quick rundown on that right now.  As you may know, I got an elliptical mahcine for Christmas. My husband put it together on Christmas Day.  Three weeks later, on Jan.13th, it broke.  The locking bolt sheared off.  My husband got a bolt from work and replaced it,but three days later on Saturday, Jan. 16th, it broke again.  This time we noted that the barings were warped.  So, I sent an email to the company.  This was Martin Luther King holiday weekend, so I didn't hear from them until Tuesday.  Instead of just sending me the parts, they wanted me to fax all kinds of information.  My husband did this on Thursday, but the two faxes he sent never arrived.  He resent them the next day.  Well, there was still a bit of a delay, but a Tech finally came out on Feb. 4th to fix the machine.  Huh!  It squealed like a stuck pig and the Tech said, "oh, the belt's really worn."  On a 3 week machine?  And he left.  I didn't try the machine until Feb. 6th and discovered that the belt still squealed, that the pedals moved in a jerky motion and that the control panel didn't work.  So, I sent another email to the service person I'd been working with, explaining the problems I still had.  That was on Feb. 7th. I tried the machine again on Feb. 9th, lo and behold, nothing had changed. I heard nothing from him. On Feb. 10th, I went back to the company's site and sent an email through their 'contact us' page.  I started it with 'Let's get one thing straight from the beginning, I AM NOT HAPPY....AT ALL.' I then asked if they thought ignoring my emails would make me happier?  I sent this email about 8:00 at night, so didn't expect a reply right away....and I didn't get it.

But the next day, Thursday, Feb. 11th, I got two phone messages and two emails, one from a Vice-President and one from the the customer service manager.  I called the customer service manager after I got home from my subbing job.  The conversation ended when the manager said, "okay, the Tech's been out already.  Let's just exchange the machine."  Sounds good to me.  I took the machine back to Academy Sports and Outdoors on Feb. 14th and exchanged it. My husband put the new one together on the Feb. 15th and I've used it twice since then (I know, not a good record).  It's wonderful.  There's a huge difference between the old one and this one.

So, my update is, for a month, I haven't exercised and I havne't stuck hard to the diet.  But I have watched what I ate and I have maintained the few pounds weight loss I achieved already.

So, how are you all doing with your goals?  Maintaining? Slipping?  It's okay to slip, just get back on track as soon as you can.

Here's the reason for my goal ... my youngest daughter is getting married in May. On Monday, I bought my dress, as size 14.  I hope I have to take it in.  It's a loose fit right now, but not too bad.  BTW, I got this dress as a bargain.  It was $228, on sale for $99.99, but since it was President's Day, they had an additional 50% off sale, so I got it for $49.99!

New Me - Week 4

Well there's not much to report this week. My machine is broken and has been for a week. Yep, last Saturday I was exercising away and it started with the really weird noises again and a scrapping of plastic against plastic. I finally stopped after about 10 mins and my husband took the thing apart again. This time, the bearings were warped. I immediately sent an email to the manufacture (BH of North America, Bladez Fitness of Foothill Ranch, CA) asking for new parts. Of course, it was Saturday of a holiday weekend, so I didn't hear back until Tuesday, when they asked for "my name, address, telephone number, model, serial number, receipt and brief description of the problem." My husband faxed it to them on Thursday and on Friday, they 'claimed' they never received the fax. So, here I sit a week later, with a broken machine, less than a month old, in my living room. I'm a bit perturbed by their total lack of help. I told them in my first email what was wrong and which parts a needed. And I emailed them back before their closing time on Friday that the fax had been sent TWICE, because my husband got distracted during the first fax and wasn't sure it went through. No response.....

I did watch what I ate during the week and managed to lose a pound, even without the exercising. But I do miss my workouts!

One change I made this week - I am drinking vegetable juice in the mornings instead of orange juice, which anyone who knows me will tell you is what I drink in the mornings. But OJ is full of sugar, so I decided to give it up for a while and see what happens.

Have you made a change in your life style to achieve a more healthy you?

New Me Week 3

Happy Saturday...it's dreary here in Houston, cloudy, rain, not overly cold, but chilly. I had an interesting week. On Wednesday, I was doing my exercises on the machine, when it started making really odd noises, my husband came to take a looksee and said, "Stop exercising!" So, I did. Turns out that the bolt holding the foot paddles onto the rotator sheared off. Mind you, I got this machine for Christmas, so I've been using it less than a month. DH managed to get the sheared bolt out of the machine and find a replacement at work the next day. The machine still makes weird noises, but he looked it over as I exercised on Thursday night and said it looked okay.

Also this week, we started The Biggest Loser diet. I joined that website a year ago, did the diet thing for a while, then stopped, but on Monday, Jan. 11th, we started it again. It's not a bad diet, just time consuming. I belonged for years to ediets.com. I should kept up that membership. I was a charter member and only had to pay $5 a month to be there! No telling what I'd pay if I rejoined now. Both of these sites are great, because they prepare the menu for you. I don't have to do that myself. I do have to make changes on the menu, because there's just some stuff I'm never going to eat! The thing I liked about ediets.com was that they allowed you to write in 'pick my own meal' for a replacement, so you weren't stuck with having to choose one of their meals. They also let you replace a meal with a fast food meal. So say I wanted go to KFC for lunch, I'd plug that in and they'd tell me what I could order to stay within my diet. The Biggest Loser site doesn't do either of those things. It would be an improvement to their site if they did.

When I was on ediets about 10 years ago, and I exercised faithfully at Curves, I lost 15 pounds. I should have stuck with it.

So, here's the weekly update: I exercised 5 days for 20 minutes. On Thursday, I increased my time to 25 minutes and I'll stick with that for a week or so, then add another 5 minuntes. I also lost 2 POUNDS. I'm excited about that!

Weekly tip: From Dr. Oz - choose a lunch you like and eat that everyday. I'm not quoting him directly, because I can't find the article, but the idea behind this was that you'd know what you were fixing and wouldn't be tempted to grab a hamburger. If you like Caesar Chicken Salad, have that. If you like tuna on crackers with grapes, have at it. Make it simple and you're more likely to stick to the diet. And yes, I'd say, you can switch it up. One week, have the chicken salad, the next week turkey on whole wheat with carrots. Make this one change in your diet, if the idea of a whole new diet scares you.....change up lunch for now.

So, how are you doing? Any words of wisdom to share?

One more thing, on Sunday, Jan. 17th, I'll be Amber Leigh William's blog The Cozy Page. Stop by and say hi! I'll be giving away a copy of my historical SALVATION BRIDE.
