Saturday’s Salacious Suggestions

Ginger Simpson

Here's a new addition to my blog....suggestions for your reading pleasure.  I really don't do very good reviews.  Reviews, in my opinion, are like blurbs and I really suck at blurbs.  While I may give an opinion once in a while on a friend's book, mostly, I'll just be letting you know about the releases that my friends have out or are about to have released.  So, to get us started, here's a video of books available or about to be released by my friend Ginger Simpson.

Reality TV versus Fictional Romance

As a bona fide romance author, I’m constantly amazed by what passes as believable on television these days. The new generation of program creators have come up with shows that supposedly represent what happens in “real life.” I’m here to tell you if the shows I’ve watched truly fall under the definition of “reality,” I’m resigning as a female human being.

In working with editors, we authors are constantly reminded that what we write has to be at least somewhat believable despite the fact that we write fiction. The plot has to be ingenious enough to draw a reader in and hold them captive until the very end, but never make them scratch their head in disbelief. Television, it seems, can present the most implausible situation, broadcast it weekly, and garner humongous ratings, yet if an author presents something ridiculous, he/she is haunted for years with crummy reviews.

If you haven’t witnessed the boob tube insanity for yourself, picture a short, little black man who dresses in garish clothing, wears a giant clock around his neck, calls himself Flava Flave and entices a dozen good-looking but evidently brainless women to come on live TV and compete for his affections. One look at his ugly mug makes me ask, “Why?” There isn’t enough money in the world.

Or, how about Bret Michaels and his Rock of Love? The script is the same, except ex-not-well-known-rocker, Michaels, flaunts his bevy of beauties and his blond “weave” all over the country in buses that sport his name in big letters…usually two vehicles, but just until he narrows the field down enough to fill only one. The aim is supposed to be finding his true love, but since he’s been on three seasons now, you’d think he’d figure out what he’s doing isn’t working. Oh sign me up! There’s nothing like swapping spit with someone who’s just had his tongue down the throat of ten other women…and usually while they all stand by and watch. There is no length to which these women won’t go to in order to win their man. And what a prize he is. NOT! Part of the thrill is touring from county fair to county fair to watch him perform. Gag! Of course part of the allure may be all the different colored bandannas he sports to hold his fake hair on his head.

My most recent find was Real Chance of Love. Here, two brothers, Real and Chance, members of a not-at-all-heard-of band, The Stallionaires, are looking for the love of their lives. What a concept. Sure not a new one! They also entice a dozen or more beauties to come spend time in their “mansion,” and compete with the others and be the last woman standing. What constantly amazes me is that these bimbos stomp their feet, cry, and get pissy if they aren’t the center of attention at all times. I keep asking myself, “What did they expect when they signed up for this gig?” Since this was Real and Chance’s second season, I’m pretty certain we can expect a third. These two are definitely not my dream men… in fact, there isn't anything real about them except one uses the name. I’d rather read a novel and create a hero in my mind’s eye. Real is maybe five feet tall, wears spandex arm covers, has a black weave longer than Cher’s, and Chance has a Mohawk and a space between his front teeth almost wide enough to drive through. Someone should encourage the producers to at least find someone with sex appeal so these women don’t appear quite so stupid.

There are so many more ridiculous shows like this, and I’m ashamed to admit I know the names of most of them. Let’s just agree that I learned them by doing research for this post. *grin*. I Love Money, The Tool Academy, oh, and let’s not forget the Kardashian clan who somehow managed to wriggle into fame and fortune on Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Really…the entire family, and now there’s a spin off for two of the sisters. Pah-leese…Do we really care what Khloe and Kourtney are doing?

What I have noticed during my “research” is that on most of these shows you earn a new name. It’s usually something given you by the “star(s)” because there’s no way they could remember common monikers. It’s much easier to call those in their harem things like: New York, Doll, Classy, Cornfed, Mamacita, Hot Wings, or Sassy. Just in case you wonder…New York started on Flava Flave, migrated to I Love Money, and then went on to get her own spin off. Cornfed was Real’s failing choice last season, while Mamacita and Sassy made the finals this year, but were left standing in tears when Chance choose Hot Wings and Real waltzed off with Doll. Oh God, help me…I know the entire cast and what happened to them.

So tell me; why would you want to watch something as ridiculous as reality, when you can read a great dose of fiction that’s believable? The only thing you can count on with reality TV is that there’s nothing original to be found. If you watch one show, you’ve watched them all. They just are filmed in different places, have different names, but believe me…all cast men no one would ever conjure up as a hero or leading man. Give me a good book any day!

Why Can't We Have Some Consistency?

I’d like to thank Anna K for sharing her blog with me today. She’s become a great friend and confidante, and despite not really liking the situation that brought us together, the occurrence is further proof that great things often blossom from bad experiences.

Back to why I'm here...I’m quite the prolific blogger on my own site, and have covered a myriad of topics. I decided to use one I posted a year or so ago, back before I had much traffic on my site. I’ve added a little more to it since every day provides more ammunition for thought. I’m hoping you’ll find it entertaining and helpful:

So, why can't we have some consistency?
This question niggles at me every time I have to deal with yet another ATM transaction machine in a retail store. I guess consistency in the types of machines would translate to a monopoly, and Lord knows we can't have that. But, I'm getting old and I only have so much space left in my brain for storage. Hence, the 'old dog/new trick' analogy is making a lot more sense to me these days.

Don't you agree, though, that it would make like much simpler if we could be uniform in SOME things. In California, the freeway lanes reserved for Carpools are called just that...CARPOOL LANES. In some states they're called Express Lanes, and in Tennessee they are called HOV Lanes. I just recently learned HOV lanes don't require High Octane fuel. I had steered clear of them since I use the lowest grade gasoline available. *lol* I finally figured out HOV means High Occupancy Vehicle. Now I'm challenged to discover how many people you must have in your car. A Volkswagen full of clowns...three people, two. Me and a blowup doll? *lol* See, we aren't even uniform in that. In my old home state it's two, in some places it's three. I can just picture the committees that make up these rules. "Well, Let's show California we can go them one better. We'll require three adults, a child and a dog."

I guess I'll have to slow down and read the signs when I pass. You can't just assume you know the answer, can you? I'm beginning to understand why people just stay home. It's easier. Besides, I don't have a dog. :)

I’ve found writing to be no less frustrating. Each publisher, editor and critiquer has their own preferences and styles, and they change from house-to-house and person-to-person. House A requires their font to Times Roman, but House B prefers, Georgia, C wants Arial, and D demands Abadi Condensed. House F wants double spacing, while G wants 1.5. Agent Orange wants a five page synopsis, but Agent Apple wants it crunched into one. Critiquer C thinks I need to say ‘she felt’, but during edits in another work, I’ve been warned away from using ‘felt’ and instructed that if you are in the character’s POV, it’s assumed she did the feeling.

Stay clear of gerunds, avoid those ‘ly’ words and use stronger verbs instead; don’t combine identifying and action tags, instead eliminate the identifier in favor of action. Example: “Don’t’ cry,” he whispered, wiping the tears from her cheeks. Better: “Don’t cry.” His voice came in a whisper while he wiped tears from her cheeks. But, I’ll bet you’ll find ten people who like the first one better. Who do you believe?

I’m about to chuck the critique groups and go with what I think I know. I’m sure somewhere along the line, I’ll get a new opinion that will convince me to change mine. Oy Vey! And I can say that because I come from Jewish lineage. *lol* And people think this writing thing is easy. Sort of walking across broken glass with bare feet.

Where Do Those Ideas Come From?

First I want to thank my hostess for allowing me a day to post on her blog. It was a lucky day when I met Miz Anna Kathryn. She's become a great friend and confidante. So...on to the topic at hand:

I know when I was purely a reader, I often wondered where authors got the ideas that fueled their stories. Now as a writer, I realize that almost every book I've written has a bit of my own life experience somewhere. It doesn't have to be a big chunk of the plot, or anything that stands out, but I think we all tend to find something to which we can relate. Whether it be an old boyfriend and the feelings he conjured up with that first kiss or a bad memory, having our hero or heroine reenact that scene gives the author a chance to perhaps deal with it in a different way, or just re-live the excitement. It might even be someone's fantasy you're reading. :)

Embezzled Love is my latest release, and sadly the whole book is based on a true-life experience. I wrote the book as a testament to my sister's strength but also as a warning to people who use the Internet as a means of finding their soul-mate. Just like everything else, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. This was not a story of success, trust me, but it did provide fodder for a very interesting and unusual story that already garnered a fabulous review--from my SON! He never reads romance, nor does he call often. He phoned the other day specifically to tell me how much he enjoyed it and what a wonderful author he thinks I am. I can only equate that with receiving as Oscar! Wow. Talk about surprised.

So, since I have the whole day here, I'm going to drop in a few times and share some of my questionable wisdom with you. At the end of the day, I shall draw a name from the people who leave comments and present a free PDF copy of any one of my available books to the winner. I hear a grandson rattling around up stairs, so before he does too much damage, I'm off to check. Be back soon.

Howdy

Ginger Simpson is back as my guest blogger. Ya'll give her a warm welcome while I go run around town gathering Hurricane supplies. Seems a tropical storm, which will probably become a hurricane is heading my way and though I doubt I'll have to evacuate, I do want to get some supplies, like water, non-perishable foods and ice. We shouldn't flood, but there is a chance we'll lose electricity.

So, Ginger, take it away!

Guest Blogging

Okay, so I'm going stir crazy over here in the hot heat of Texas. Yeah, that's it, the heat is frying my brain. The fact I'm the contest chair for an RWA chapter contest, that received 2.3 times as many entries this year as it did last year, and I had to find judges for those entries, might also have something to do with my craziness of late.

But, I digress. So, I thought I was guest blogging on Ginger Simpson's blog. And I am, but what I was really supposed to do was guest chat on her yahoo loop. I wrongly remembered I was supposed to guest blog on the blog while at a play date for my granddaughter and no computer was to be found. But I stopped by my mom's and dropped in a blog, thinking all was not lost.

When I finally got home about 4 PM, I had a zillion messages asking where I was, since I was supposed by guesting on the loop. I quickly put up some posts, talking about my day, and my stories.

But I can still guest blog for a while (not really sure how long, but a week or two). So I will be over there and I see that a few other authors are blogging as well and leaving lots of interesting posts. So hop on over and check it out (see post below for the link, please).

I'll be thinking of something interesting to say, I promise!
