Saturday's Salacious Suggestions

A SCANDAL TO REMEMBER
by Phyllis Campbell

Revenge and passion come together as Cecily Lawrence attempts to make right the scandal that ruined her six years ago. Garrett Hastings, Earl of Blackmore, may not have taken her virginity that night they secretly met in the greenhouse, but being caught in an intimate embrace with the rogue definitely ruined her for any other man. Now, on his wedding day, she is determined to kidnap him but make it look like he’s running out on his own marriage to be with his mistress.

Garrett must marry Lady Fairbourne or else his grandmother will cut him out of her will and take away his funds. Although there’s only been one woman who made his heart flutter—Miss Cecily Lawrence—he knows joining the Fairbourne family will secure his trust fund. But when he’s kidnapped and realizes Cecily is the one who abducted him—and discovers the real story behind the scandal six years ago—his plans change drastically.

Holding out for our heroes!

Today I'm going to talk about one of my favorite historical western romances. Since I can't talk about Anna Kathryn's Salvation Bride, I'm going to yack about Holding Out For A Hero - my first historical western.

At the end of this month - Feb 28 - this story will be unavailable. So...now is the time to get it! If you want the ebook, it's only $3.00!!! Also, the paperback is still available on Amazon. This was the first book with Champagne Books where they printed on the front cover "Best Selling Author." What a thrill that was to see!!! If you like the old west - and humor with your romance - then you'll LOVE my story!

5-Roses! Ms. Campbell has written an exciting western that will have you rapidly turning the pages for the shocking climax. The secondary characters of Clint and Violet carry this story well with their own secrets. This book will have you laughing out loud with Summer’s antics. She is feisty to the core. Her and Jesse’s banter brings humor one minute and the next minute you want to cry because the book is so emotional. I love this kind of story that takes you on an emotional roller coaster. And you feel a part of the Wild West, filled with bank robbers, Texas Rangers and life on the western frontier. This book will have western lovers like me clamoring for more stories to come and waiting for your perfect hero. ~~ My Book Cravings / Sherry

**excerpt**

Jesse stood close, and his nearness was uncomfortably pleasant, crazily twisting her emotions out of control. Out of the corner of her eyes, she noticed his gaze skimming over her body. Her face burned.

Angrily Summer puffed and lowered the string to her waist, keeping her gaze toward the window. “Would you please stop looking at me?”

“Can’t. There’s nothin’ else to look at.”

“Then go some place else.”

“You don’t like me lookin’?”

“No,” she clipped.

“Liar.”

Summer met his stare and lifted her chin stubbornly. “I’m not lying.”

His attention moved over her hair, face, and body, and he gave her a cocky grin. “Tell me somethin’, Summer. What were you dreamin’ about when I first came in?”

She swallowed hard and she knew her heated face gave away her thoughts. “Well, if you must know, I was just fanta—uhm –” She cleared her dry throat. “I mean I was imagining what it would be like to be married and living in a place like this.”

His grin widened. “You were fantasizin’, huh?”

“No, I was imagining.”

“Same thing.”

“No, it’s not.”

Softly, his fingers caressed her cheek. “You were blushin’ just now, Summer. Your face glowed like a lighthouse. That doesn’t happen very often. What were you thinkin’?”

She knocked his hand away and faced the window. “You startled me, that’s probably why my face was red.”

He moved closer, bracketing the wall beside her with one hand. “Were you thinkin’ about being alone with a man? Were you fantasizin’ about how it would be on your weddin’ night?” he whispered in her ear.

She forced a laugh. “Of course not. Nice girls don’t think about things like that.”

He tilted his head and grinned. “But you were.”

She spun around and her hand flew through the air to slap his face, but he stopped it before it could connect with his cheek. He grabbed her other wrist and imprisoned both arms behind her waist, then backed her up against the wall. It only took a second for her to react to the hard contours of his chest as it against her bosom. Desire flowed hot through her. It felt so right, but this was so wrong.

She struggled. “Let me go.”

“No, Summer. I want to know what you were thinkin’.”

“I told you.”

“No, you didn’t. I want you to tell me how you think it’ll be on your weddin’ night.”

“You’re an animal,” she spat.

“Were his lips touchin’ yours in a passionate kiss?” he prodded.

His heart pounded against hers, the rhythm matching perfectly with the beat coming from her. “Jesse, please.” Her voice softened. “Why are you doing this?”

His lips hovered over hers as he stared into her eyes. “I don’t know. I wish I could make some sense out of this, but I can’t.”

Jesse’s mouth touched her, and she gasped, but surprisingly, she didn’t want to pull away. Softly, his lips coaxed for a response, and she didn’t know whether she should give him one. She fought the feelings, but when he hesitantly caressed her mouth, she couldn’t resist any longer. Her body relaxed, and for the first time in her life she let herself experience what it felt like to be really kissed by a man.

When his grasp on her wrists relaxed, she slid her hands up and stroked his neck, then threaded her fingers through his hair. She kissed him back, thrilling over the feeling of his soft lips touching hers. He pecked first on her top lip, then her bottom, then suckled them one at a time. Seconds later, his tongue entered her mouth. She gasped, but it felt so good. A soft moan released from her throat and she stilled, waiting for him to show her the way.

He slanted his mouth over hers, and suddenly the kiss turned wild. She exhaled a throaty moan and clung to him, her fingers digging into the collar of his shirt while her tongue copied the stokes his made in her mouth.

“Summer,” he whispered and pulled her closer with an urgency she really didn’t understand. She had no desire to stop him. In her mind, she replayed her fantasy and wished for the reality.

His had moved to her breast, and rested. Her nipple stiffened against his palm. As he plucked softly through the fabric of her dress, her nipples responded even more.

She let him caress her for a brief moment until she heard her aunt’s cautious voice ringing through her head. It was wrong for her body to experience this kind of pleasure. It’d be different if they were married. But they weren’t. And he was promised to her sister.

She tore her mouth from his. “Jesse, no.” She tried to pull away, but his tight hold prevented her from moving.

“Oh, Summer,” he sighed.

The thrill of everything happening brought another moan from her throat, but she knew she couldn’t surrender. The strange feeling began to overwhelm her, but she couldn’t forget he was her sister’s fiancĂ©.

My head is in the clouds

First, I want to think Anna Kathryn for having me as her guest blogger today. This is exciting! I loved her blog about buying that village in England. If only I had the money....

Today I'd like to talk about my upcoming story from The Wild Rose Press, The Man Hunt. It's due to be released on March 25 - in a couple of days, and I'm holding my breath until it's out. A few years ago, one of my co-workers introduced me to her son - a VERY good looking guy going through a heart-breaking divorce. As I thought about this Hunk, I realized he needed a happily ever after - even if it's in my imagination. heehee His name is Brock - just what I named my sexy hero. But you know, the hero of my story took his own identity as I wrote, and he's nothing like the Brock in real life. Now it's okay to slobber over my hero without feeling guilty. Check out the awesome trailer, too!

Unwilling to let another man control her life, Dr. Jordan Reed hires someone to portray her new love interest to satisfy her nagging stepmother. Part of the bargain is that he convince her ex-boyfriend that she has happily moved on. Unfortunately, it’s hard to prove when Brock Hamill blames Jordan for his sister’s suicide and embarks on a mission to destroy her psychiatric credibility. Acting the part of a patient, his mission is deterred by the doctor’s hot body and giving heart, and when he discovers her life 's in jeopardy, he’s willing to reveal his true identity to save her. Will Jordan forgive his deceit when she learns the truth?

**excerpt**
Doctor Jordan Reed squinted and adjusted her eyes to the dimly lit bar. The Standard Examiner lay opened in front of her as she scanned the advertisement. Woman seeking man for business partner. Must be charming and witty. Must be between thirty and forty-five and have acting ability. Call 1-800-777-4042 to arrange interview.

“Oh no! Erica, what have you done?”

Jordan focused on the little black letters that practically reached out and slapped her. She slumped forward, banged her forehead on the table, finally letting it come to rest on the opened newspaper. “Why? Why? Why?” she moaned.

Sitting across the table, Erica patted Jordan’s hand. “Don’t be mad at me. It’ll work out. I promise.”

“Oh, God, Erica! This makes me look desperate.” Jordan shook her head. Her forehead crinkled the paper. “Then again, maybe I am. I should be the patient instead of the psychiatrist.”

Erica laughed. “Will you stop worrying? I told you, everything will be just fine.”
Jordan raised her head just enough to look at her friend. Yeah right. “How many people do you think are going to read this ad? How many people will actually take it seriously? Damn, Erica, what kind of woman hunts for a man by taking out an ad in the newspaper, especially in my profession? That’s what people are going to think and don’t say they won’t.”

Erica shrugged her thin shoulders. “You’ve been hurt. People will understand…at least the right people will. And I don’t think you need help. All you need is—” She bit her bottom lip and drew her brows together.

Jordan straightened and looked at her friend. “What do I need?”

The corner of Erica’s mouth lifted into a smirk. “It’s like I told you before, all you need is a good romp in the sack. That will cure all your problems.”

“Oh Lord.” Jordan rolled her eyes and thumped her head back on the table. Pain exploded like a cannon in her skull. She yelped.

Erica touched Jordan’s head. “Are you all right?”

“I will be after my head stops pounding.”

Erica chuckled and scooted across her seat. “I’m going to get our drinks. What do you want?”

“Nothing. I need a clear head to finish the work day, especially now that I’ve seen the havoc you’ve caused.”

“Okay, no vodka. How about soda and water?”

“That’s fine.”

Jordan worked her hands between her head and the newspaper and massaged her aching skull. How could it have come to this? Sure, Erica was only thinking about her, but an ad in the newspaper? Oh, God! Still, desperate times called for desperate measures. Didn’t they? She’d been without a man since Kenneth left. Kenneth, the man she thought she’d spend the rest of her life with. The man who broke her heart when he married her wealthy stepmother. And now they were coming for a visit. Like she wanted to see him. No way she’d let either of them see her without a man.

As much as she wanted to yell and cuss at her secretary for placing the ad, Jordan had to admit hiring someone to portray her boyfriend wasn’t a bad idea. Especially since she was running out of time.

Humiliation spread through her at the thought of Kenneth discovering how much he’d hurt her two years ago. Especially after he laughed in her face and told her she’d never have another relationship. Then again, he always thought he was God’s gift to women. Oh how she wished her stepmother hadn’t gone against her advice and married the jerk anyway. Not that she blamed her stepmother. Kenneth had been so conniving and convincing. It made Jordan ill just to think of it.

A warm hand touched her shoulder, before the intoxicating scent of male spice lured her from her thoughts. “Excuse me, miss. Are you all right?”

Why did everyone ask her that? She huffed, ready to give the stranger a set down if he thought she was an easy pick-up, and raised her head. She sat up, turned toward the intruder, and opened her mouth to speak. The words got lost. It took a minute to remember to breathe.

Absolutely gorgeous!

His freshly-shaven, square jaw emphasized his slightly pointed nose and highlighted a beautiful smile. Dreamy! Sexy! Even in the smoke-filled shadows of the bar, Charlie’s Passion, his dark hair grabbed her attention - cut short and slicked back, just the way she liked.

His eyes hypnotized her. Because of the shadows, she couldn’t detect a color, but it was as if his wide, radiant eyes saw right through her. For a moment, she caught a glimpse of a wild wolf lurking in their depths.

She shivered and blinked a few times to see if the image disappeared. Was she dreaming, or was there really a man so incredibly good-looking, so incredibly sexy in this bar?

“Miss? You all right?” he spoke again, mentally shaking her from her stupor.

She nodded. “I was just...hmmm, well...” She glanced down at the wrinkled paper. “I was reading the paper.”

His smile widened, and he slid into the seat beside her. His eyes drifted to her head. “With your forehead?”

She chuckled and rubbed the still smarting tender spot. He brushed her fingers away. Heat from his skin pierced through her like a lightening bolt.

“There’s something on your forehead.” When he leaned closer, his rock-hard chest bumped her shoulder. Warmth spread through every limb right down to her toes. His raspberry colored tongue peeked over his lip, just as he slid his thumb across it. When he lifted his hand to rub off the mark, she couldn't take her eyes off his face. The liquid heat on his thumb burned her skin like molten lava, making her insides tremble.

“The paper left its mark on you.”

She swallowed hard. Not just the paper left its mark, so had he.

Meet Phyllis Campbell

Today's guest blogger is multi-published author Phyllis Campbell. Thanks for being my final blogger for the month, Phyllis.

When did you start to write and how long did it take you get published? How many stories did you finish before you were published?
I started writing when my youngest daughter was in kindergarten, so that would have been 1993. For the first four, maybe five years I wrote for fun. I let a few of my neighbors and co-workers read my stories, and they liked them. This encouraged me to start learning more about the art of writing so that maybe one day I would get published. That’s when I joined critique groups and began my learning process. In 2003 I received my first publishing contract, which was a thrill. By this time I had 22 stories started. Most were finished, but needed major revisions. And now in 2008, I have added 25 more.

What influenced you to write?
Believe it or not, it was watching a bad movie. The movie was pretty good at first. A love story, of course. Had a suspenseful plot along with the love story…but it had a terrible ending!! No Happily Ever After. Made me so mad that I wasted my time getting involved with this story then to have the hero and heroine not end up together. UGH! So that night I went to bed and had a dream. I usually dream like I’m watching a movie, so when I woke up, I realized it had the makings of a romance. I grabbed a notebook, and pencil, curled up on the couch and started to write. That’s all it took and I was hooked!! Of course it helped that up to this point I was an avid reader of romance anyway.

What inspired you to write romance?
I was always the shy girl in school. No, don’t laugh, I was. I didn’t get the boyfriends I wanted. Even now I don’t think I really got my Happily Ever After. But back when I was fresh out of school, I was in love with love. I began by writing skits for my church and community. They were comedies, of course, but they always had a love story in it. After I was married was when I started reading romance novels. I loved that feel good moment at the end when I reached the Happily Ever After…the Ahhhh moment is what I call it. I guess I’m still in love with love.

What genre or sub-genre do you write? Why did you choose this genre?
I love historicals!! I can’t get enough of them. I think the reason I love this genre is because the very first romance book I read was A Rose In Winter by Kathleen E Woodiwiss. I was caught up in the mystery and especially the forbidden romance. After that I read all of her books, then moved on to Judith McNaught. I love to read about the Rogue… Gads, those men are sexy!

Tell us about your other works, books, stories, etc.
Well…I do have quite a few published, not only historicals, but contemporaries. Here is my list:
The Man Hunt (Contemporary coming soon to The Wild Rose Press)
Danger In Her Arms (Romantic Suspense with The Wild Rose Press)
Her Knight Of Seduction (Victorian with The Wild Rose Press)
Always, My Love (Victorian with Champagne Books)
Vows Of Deception (Victorian with Champagne Books)
Holding Out For A Hero (Western Historical with Champagne Books)
Queen Of Hearts (Western Historical with Vintage Publishing)
Ten Ways To Melt A Man’s Heart (Romantic Comedy with Champagne Books)
Crazy Cupid (Time-Travel / Contemporary in Valentine’s Day Anthology with Champagne Books)
It Must Have Been The Mistletoe (Contemporary in Christmas Anthology with Champagne Books)
Snow Angel (contemporary short story coming soon with Love Stories Magazine)

What are you working on now?
I just barely finished a Regency titled, The Sweetest Temptation. In a time when everything hinges on the rules of polite society, a man and woman find themselves fighting secret desires. Newly-orphaned Judith Faraday is thrown off kilter by her uninvited attraction to her guardian's son. Spending time with the handsome rogue surpasses the boundary of impropriety, but perhaps no harm will come from the bargain she makes with him to discover what has become of her secret fiancĂ©. Trey Worthington foolishly agrees to help his mother prepare Miss Faraday for her coming out ball, while knowing all along she has her heart set on another. But he can’t explain the sudden possessiveness he feels when men come to court her. Haunted by mistakes from the past, Trey will do anything not to fall in love with Judith, yet passion turns into more. Can a tortured man find happiness? Or will his past come back to end it all?

Another story I’m working on is my first historical paranormal titled Night Secrets. Morgan Thornton has not been human for two years when a witch cursed him. Labeled East Wing Ghost by his family to hide the truth, he seeks to find a way to lift the curse and free himself, and at the same time he’s torn between warning the curious Miss Forester of the dangers lurking in the manor she’s visiting and keeping her in his arms.

How do you write? Are you a panster or a plotter? Is it your characters or your plot that influences you the most?
I’m totally a panster. I really don’t want to know how the story is going to end. I want to be surprised along with my readers. Heehee But lately, I’ve been doing more plotting than I’ve ever done before, and this is quite exciting, too. Go figure. My characters are usually what influences me the most, but because of their goals, motivations, and the conflict, the story becomes exciting.

What was the most usual way you came up with a story idea? I mean, I’ve gotten a plot idea from a song I heard, from brainstorming with a classmate. What unusual thing caused you to think, ‘hey, I could make that into a story?’
The very first story I ever plotted is my romantic comedy – Ten Ways To Melt A Man’s Heart. It was the end of November or beginning of December. I was in the middle of planning / organizing a Christmas dinner for my church, so I didn’t have time to think of a story. One day while I was at work, I read an article on the Internet. Can’t remember if it was on Yahoo or MSN. The article’s title was about making a man ‘swoon’. At first I rolled my eyes and didn’t even read it, but off and on during the day I kept seeing that header, so finally I read it. All of a sudden a story popped into my head. It was a funny story and I couldn’t wait to write it – but not now. So the next day at work during the slow part of the day I started naming my characters. By that evening, my characters wanted to be written, but I didn’t have time. The more I thought about my story, the more it came together until I HAD to plot it. Before my Christmas dinner, I write one chapter, and that seemed to calm my characters until after the dinner a week later. But once that was over, I was writing my story. It was so fun. In some scenes I laughed so hard I cried.

Tell us some of the things interviewers are saying about your story or stories.
I’ve been very thrilled with my reviews. Back when my romantic comedy was reviewed, the reviewer labeled me “QUEEN OF SEXUAL TENSION”. I laughed over this one, but was proud to wear the crown. After that, other reviewers picked up on it and continued to give me the title with all my books. Gotta love that. Another thing they say is how I keep them turning the pages. They enjoy how I can pull the reader in and keep them spellbound until the last page. Some reviewers call my stories ‘masterpieces’. They have also enjoyed the suspense I add to my stories even if it’s just a little. Oh, and I can’t forget the humor. They love my humor, too.

What advice would you give aspiring writers today?
Do not give up! Learn as much as you can that will help you be a better writer. Don’t let rejection letters keep you down, but brush yourself off and try again. Never say quit!
